basically armageddon. the white house today focused on even more spending. the obama administration releasing the details of a plan to pump 50 billion more tax dollars into a stimulus-like tag -- package aimed at infrastructure as the president's continues blaming the republican party for the sequestered spin its alleged consequences. white house press secretary jay carney actually mocks congress today for being on recess with a deadline looming, telling republicans there is a very simple solution to this sequestration problem. simply capitulate to the president and the democratic party. >> i don't want to make predictions. i would note that congress is up this week, which says something, i suppose. but the fact of the matter is the march 1st deadline is looming. congress has an option, a very simple option, which is to take up the proposals put forth by senate democrats and house democrats. lou: being very helpful to the republican leaders. the problem with this statement is, there is no democratic proposal. the president has not picked up the phone to even begin to initiate or neg

the federal government has nothing to do with first responders, teachers, or administrators. the obama white house seems to want us to believe that the streets will be filled with both toddlers and crux, airports will resemble a ghost towns, and the federal government work force will be reduced by about one-third. scary. scary except we have heard all of this before. are very on president. we heard it in the debt ceiling debate. we heard it in the run-up to the fiscal cliff. remember this threaduring the debt ceiling debate back in the summer of 2011? i cannot guarantee that those checks go out on august 3rd if we have not resolve this issue because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it. this is not just a matter of social security checks, veterans' check folks on disability and their checks. about 70 million checks that go out. lou: more recently in the linda congressional session in the fiscal. >> debate, president obama issued his threat. >> what has been holding us back is the dysfunction here in washington. and if people start seeing that on january 1st this problem

obama deputy campaing manager stephanie cutter, both white house veterans and from the congress representative tom cole and keith ellison, democrat of minnesota. let's get right to you, jon karl. you've been digging into the white house. what are their plans for the state of the union? >> the white house, the president wants to see this, the headline coming out of the speech as it was about jobs and the economy. that's going to be the focus here. they're a little stung by some of the criticism of the inaugural for not focusing on jobs. >> of course. >> they would argue it's not fair, but that's -- so this is going to have new initiatives on infrastructure, on education, on clean energy, and it's going to be all about the middle class expanding the middle class and a big warning on this, the automatic spending cuts that are scheduled to go in effect on march 1st. >> i do want to talk about that. that sequester across-the-board spending cuts. how about the tone? one of the things we've seen from the president since his re-election since is fairly confrontational across the board.

. >>> the president is speaking and answering questions at the business council dinner in d.c. obama is voicing his opinion on chuck hagel's long-awaited confirmation saying the u.s. has the secretary that our troops deserve. it was close but lawmakers did confirm hagel 58 to 41. he is scheduled to be sworn in today. that means hagel now heads into office with a list of challenges ahead. first up, the sequester hits friday friday. without a deal, the defense department is facing about $46,000,000,000 in cuts before the end of september. that means hundreds of thousands of furloughed civilians and cuts that will affect military equipment and ness. hagel will also need to deal with getting the troops out of afghanistan and compromising with republicans. that last part won't come easy. texas senator john cornyn has made it clear hagel is taking office with the least amount of support as any defense secretary in modern history. we will be right back. 9am eastern. >> i'm a slutty bob hope. >> you are. >> the troops love me. follow closely. he was nominated to be the cia director in 1991, and as an obama supporter, i was shocked to find out that he was going to be kept on as the secretary of defense. what he told people, i found, and it was a major reasoning for why i wanted to write this book, what he said is that we are moving towards a smaller military. one that will do fewer things than be able to go fewer places, which he thought was a terrible thing and he added that he didn't want to be a part of that kind of a system that is going to retrench. my feeling has always been that we need a smaller military that will do fewer things and go to fewer places. so that is the kind of book that i wanted to write. i thought that i should do it even though others have mined a lot of this. i'm sure a lot of you are familiar with the works who wrote things like the american empire and 10 years before that, john neuhaus, one of my favorite new york writers, wrote imperial america. other books have dealt with this. the background and ascends, i have spent 42 years in the government beyond the state department, defense
